Duties
Administrators of network and computer systems often perform the following tasks:
Administrators are responsible for the servers, desktops, and mobile devices of a business. It is their job to keep email and data storage networks running smoothly. Employees' workstations are also checked to make sure they're running smoothly and connected to the company's core computer network.
Telecommunications networks are under the control of some administrators.
Administration can aid in the creation and analysis of network models by network architects. They also have a say in what new gear and software the company will buy in the future to keep its network current. Administrators may also manage computer support professionals who assist in resolving issues with users' computers.
Education
A bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related discipline, such as networking or information technology, is often required for network and computer systems administrators, however an associate degree or postsecondary certificate may be acceptable in some cases. Computer network and system administration is the subject of degree programs. A degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering, on the other hand, is typically suitable for administrators because they work with computer hardware and equipment. Computer programming, networking, and systems design are common courses in these programs.
Managing a network is a continually evolving task, and administrators need to stay on top of it. In order to stay on top of the newest developments in technology, many people take courses and attend IT conferences throughout their careers. A master's degree may be required of administrators in some companies.
Registration, Certification, and Licensure
Network and computer systems administrators are often required to get certifications in the products they employ. Vendor-neutral certification providers, on the other hand, typically provide certification programs. Obtaining a certification verifies that network and computer systems administrators have the necessary skills and know-how, as well as the ability to apply industry standards. Some of the most popular certifications are offered by Microsoft and Cisco.
Advancement
Advancement to the position of computer network architect is possible for network administrators. Managerial positions in IT, such as computer and information systems managers, are also an option for these professionals.
Characteristics of Critical Importance
Analytical abilities. Networks and systems need to be evaluated by administrators to ensure their reliability and to anticipate changes in consumer needs.
The ability to communicate. For non-IT staff, administrators must explain problems and possible remedies.
The ability to multitask. Administrators may be faced with juggling a slew of issues and responsibilities.
Ability to think creatively and solve problems. Computer network problems must be resolved immediately by administrators.
Pay
A network and computer systems administrator's yearly salary were $84,810 in May 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. When half of an occupation's workforce earns more than the median wage, the wage is referred to as the "median." The lowest tenth made less than $52,830, while the top tenth made more than $134,970 per year in wages.
Job Projections
Network and computer systems administrators' employment is expected to expand by 5% between 2020 and 2030, which is lower than the average for all occupations.
