Duties
The following is typical of sales engineers:
It is the job of a sales engineer to sell high-tech items. Technical abilities are used to describe the advantages of their products or services to potential clients and demonstrate how they are superior to their competitors' offerings. Companies that create and manufacture technological items employ some sales engineers. Others are employed by small businesses that specialize in selling products on their own.
Sales engineers have many of the same responsibilities as ordinary salespeople. It is their job to entice the customer to make a purchase, then work out a price with them. As a part of their job, sales engineers demonstrate how their products can address specific client problems through technical presentations.
In other cases, sales engineers collaborate with other salespeople, such as wholesale and manufacturing sales reps, to advertise and sell the product, freeing up the sales engineer's time to focus on their core competencies. Each member of a sales team is allowed to focus on his or her own talents and expertise when working together.
More and more sales engineers are taking on additional responsibilities connected to sales, such as doing market research. Clients' technical specifications may also be requested, and items may then be customized to match the demands of individual customers. Some sales engineers collaborate with R&D divisions to find and create new goods.
Education
A bachelor's degree in engineering or a closely related subject, like business, is often required for sales engineers. However, if a candidate has sales and technical expertise or training, they may be able to complete the requirements even if they do not have a degree.
The typical length of an engineering degree program at a university is four years of full-time study. All curricula contain courses in math and physics, regardless of their specific focus. In addition, the majority of courses need proficiency with computers.
There are a number of engineering schools that require students to specialize in one subject. Some engineering departments offer additional majors, such as chemical, biological, or computer hardware engineering, in addition to the more popular electrical, mechanical, and civil engineering majors. As a result of this, many undergraduate schools provide a basic engineering curriculum, which students can subsequently specialize in either on the job or during graduate school.
Training
To be able to operate as a sales engineer on their own, new engineering graduates often need sales experience and training. General sales strategies are covered, as well as the employer's business operations, clients, procedures, and company culture. Following their first training period, sales engineers may continue to work with someone who lacks technical expertise but succeeds in sales.
Engineering and sales education is critical for sales engineers to keep up with throughout their careers. Their worth to their company is largely dependent on their ability to understand and market the most current technology. Many high-tech sectors like information technology and sophisticated electronics necessitate regular retraining for sales engineers who work in these fields.
Advancement
In addition to a raise in pay, a bigger sales area or a promotion to the role of supervisor or sales manager are also possibilities for career advancement.
Qualities that are critical to success
Personality traits. Sales engineers benefit greatly from having good communication and relationship-building abilities, as well as the ability to work well with others in the sales team.
The ability to solve problems. They must be a good listener and then propose solutions, such as tailoring a product to the customer's needs.
Self-confidence. If you want to be a successful sales engineer, you need to be confident and convincing.
Technical expertise. Sales engineers must have a deep understanding of the technologically advanced items they offer in order to explain their merits and respond to customer inquiries.
Pay
An annual salary of $108,830 was reported in May 2020 as the average for sales engineers. When half of an occupation's workforce earns more than the median wage, the wage is referred to as the "median wage." Less than $60,730 was earned by the bottom 10%, while more than $184,190 was earned by the top 10%.
Job Projections
Sales engineers are expected to see an 8% increase in employment between 2020 and 2030, which is roughly the same as the national average for all occupations.
